The Curlew Challenge

Good for him! He made a real nice costume as well. Had me thinking of the episodes with the Crowcroft Challenge and where Compo wears a pigeon outfit from Wally while trying to fly or hang glide.
What a wonderful way to RAISE AWARENESS on the plight of this bird. Apparently, the curlew is suffering a loss of habitat. So sad. I hope that his Nidderdale walk has brought much awareness. I wonder if he was inspired by the Crowcroft Challenge.

The article Marianna posted has a link added to it of him talking post race about what he did. I skimmed over it but did not see any mention or nod to our show and Crowcroft Challenge. Would have been nice if he said he was inspired by the episode.

I remember seeing a movie as a ten or eleven year old called The Last Of The Curlews produced by HANNAH BARBARA I think. It was a daunting story and affected me as a kid. I grew up in the Peak District UK and had occasional sightings of them as an adult. Man has not taken good care of this garden of Eden nowhere near good enough.
It was on YouTube but it's been took down.
Hard to find.

Wow, Mikey that is unlike any Hanna-Barbera animation I have ever enjoyed as a kid: Tom & Jerry, Yogi Bear, etc. Only found about a 1 minute clip of where the bird gets shot, no other context with it.

Only come across a few farmers and hunters in my life time and they all had extreme respect for the land and animals upon it. Doubt they would shoot a shore bird like that just for the heck of it. The curlews are not like a coyote killing the farmers livestock.

Yeah the environmental is a big talking issue. I don't really involve myself in it anymore. I did. A lot. Yikes.
Anyway I'm old and can't be bothered anymore.
Anyway yes last of the curlews was very dark for HB but it certainly hit home for many me included.
It was based on a story book of the same name.

I can see where that would shake a kid up, mikey. Glad they showed things like "Johnathon Livingston Seagull", "The Line and the Dot" and things when I was younger.

There was also another interesting one I cannot recall the name of. Think it was a stop motion puppet / claymation style. Was about two or three blind mice (or rats) that would follow a series of strings staked to the ground from where they lived to a river or water source. Not sure if they were brothers or related. There was a sneaky ferret type critter that would move the strings around on the mice without them knowing it. He convinced them the water had gone dry. Then one would go get water (after the ferret moved the strings again) and accuse the others of lying. Got the mice fighting amongst themselves. That's about all I can remember, haha. Would like to find out what it was and rewatch sometime.
