Early Episodes

If getting the UK DVD is not an option, you can view any of those episodes on YouTube. I have even downloaded them to my computer so I can watch them any time. They are not closed caption and are not the best quality, but they are better than not getting to see them at all.

Is closed captioned what we call sub-titled?

Since no one took a stab at evaluating my hypothesis, I ran it by the guru at my favorite local computer shop and ordered an external DVD drive. It was delivered today and I've just installed it and tested my hypothesis.

It works exactly as anticipated, at a nearly trivial price, so now the DVD drive built into my computer can remain permanently set to region 1 and the external DVD drive can remain permanently set to region 2. Although I might occasionally forget and insert a disc of the wrong region, the software for each drive will display a warning and ask if I want to change the region. It will also display the number of changes remaining before the region is permanently set to the last region selected, so it protects me from my own absentmindedness, as well.

That sounds like a very good approach

foolproof!

Is closed captioned what we call sub-titled?

Close, but no cigar.

American English uses both terms, each with a slightly different meaning.

Closed captioning is for hearing impaired viewers, so it includes descriptions of sound effects and sometimes the caption states the fact that there's music playing in spots where nothing appears to be happening.

Subtitles are translations to another language, so they include only the dialog.

For all I know, the term 'closed caption' might not be used in British English.

We had a bad storm this past tuesday, and lost blueray, sons game, and a 46 inch Smart TV.:( So will purchase a DVD player that is duel , plan to get first 2 seasons!!! 8)

What a shame to lose the electronics. Hope that was the extent of your losses. You'll certainly enjoy being able to view all of seasons one and two in the form that they were originally aired.

Goodness me, you mean the storm blew it out? Right thru the walls? I didn't think that happened anymore. So sorry.

I have not used a dvd player for some time, the dvd's I had were converted and stored onto hard discs fitted in a NAS box, recently there were upgraded to Synology NAS boxes, see picture, over the 2 boxes there is 24 TB of storage, enough programming to last 6-7 years end to end.so reliance on live TV these days is zilch, the 2 NAS boxes are connected to the network (Router) and with these amazing boxes http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00K2VLSL2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which are about 2 inches square I can stream all the content via wireless to my TV's

Oops , Sorry Ellen should have made clearer comment. I suppose we were hit by lightening Wed, the internet people came out and found out a fuse out on the electric pole went out. So, got connected with the world wide web later that day. Then my blueray/DVD player wouldn't even come on.(still stuck with an early Foggy inside). After a long time on line with Sony tech support, and the support at store where we purchased, it was gone. My son had just hooked up his Playstation 4 also, commenting on how well it had lasted. Not sure of its fate , but when my son comes home for a weekend he will be tearing into the DVD and TV to see how they work. He loves tearing things apart.

Is there a generic term for the NAS boxes? I'm seeing something that seems similar to my untutored mind on Amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/WD-TV-Media-Player-WDBYMN0000NBK-HESN/dp/B00JXFM75Y/ref=dp_ob_title_ce, but can't really tell whether or not it functions the same way.

And my usual concern — can you access and activate the subtitles/closed captions?

NAS Boxes are Network Attached Storage which are these http://www.amazon.com/Synology-2-5inch-Network-Attachment-Storage/dp/B00GOGPNEW/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1405260130&sr=1-9&keywords=synology+ds414

On top of that you will need hard drives I use the Western Digital 3TB red

You get get the media player from Ebay.com here http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sumvision-Cyclone-Micro-4-HD-Media-Player-Network-Streamer-Miracast-DLNA-1080P-/191187499618?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item2c83a9ba62

And can you access and activate the closed captions (subtitles) when you view files? If they are lost in the conversion process, I'll stay with discs.

Great! Did you have to specify anything in particular in the ripping process to get that output, or did it happen by default?
