Air India flight 171

The preliminary report on this air accident has been published and it finds that both engines had been shut down manually by one of the pilots moments after take off. Both fuel cut off switches had been switched to the off position and then switched back to on but by then it was too late. It seems there is no way the switches could have been flicked by accident. They have to be lifted against a strong spring and located in a slot to the off position. Let the conspiracy theories begin. Very sad.

I happened across this video yesterday afternoon. He does a great job of describing those switches and protocol in using them. Was not expecting the turn the video took about 2/3rds in (@13min) where he mentions he is also a counselor. How important it can be to genuinely ask someone "How are you doing?"

I watched him this morning, wasn't expecting that turn either! Do you watch Mentour pilot. He's an airline pilot also. Always interesting to hear his views.

I have seen some by Mentour Pilot but not for a while. Enjoy vids on planes, trains, ships, you name it but don't actively seek them out. Saw a few on container shipping the other week. If something is mechanical I like to find out how they work.

After watching the video I posted was left thinking what a good Samaritan the guy is. How we can easily get wrapped up in our own lives that we can forget others are dealing with problems too. Inspiring.
