If she told her kids that Compo had died in the war then most likely they would not seek him out. Which they might do if they knew he was alive. Maybe when the kids were young she heard Compo had gotten married - to the lady who then left him for a Polish guy. She may have not wanted to complicate things further. Or maybe that is why his wife left him, she found out he had kids and went off with someone else.

Forget the circumstances of how she died if mentioned. If it was an illness in which she knew she was going to die soon and she wanted to be honest about Compo then she may have told their kids, now adults, that he was still alive and where he was in case they wanted to get in touch.
