My local opticians closed years ago so no real choice but I 100% agree with you Rod try to use independent shops in preference to corporate chains as much as possible . I read a brief article about the Birmingham pound [sure its been done other places] where you buy locally printed currency with cash and it can only be spent in local businesses which is a great idea as it keeps the money in the local economy , assume it does not include the ability to spend them in branches of the Corporate chains .
 
There are several names given to the currency unit that is a pound . Lost and found , nicker and quid are common slang terms the latter two then get translated further to Alan Wicker [Travel Writer and Journalist] and Bin Lid . Nicker used to be the most common and gave rise to the old joke about why a lady with one leg can never give you change for a pound .... because she only has half a [k]nicker :08: . Quid allegedly comes from quid pro quo "one thing for another" implying exchange and hence the association with money.
 
OK, I do understand "the pound" as a basic unit of British currency.

What I guess I missed were the Birmingham pound, the Bristol
Pound and others.

Just to be clear Chuck to help local businesses in the Birmingham, Bristol and other cities and towns they would print local versions currency denominations which people could buy in exchange for real currency at specialist shops and local banks . All of the local shops would take payment for goods in these local versions of currency denominations and so people both living in the area or indeed visiting can purchase goods using this local currency, which the shops can then redeem at the local specialist shops/banks who sell the local currency denominations.

I think its a great scheme because it means that money is being ploughed into local businesses and keeping them afloat plus it offers a market for local produce to sell their wares on a permanent basis rather than just at a weekly market .
 
Actually sounds like a great idea. We could have Raleigh dollars,
Durham dollars, Pittsboro dollars etc. Could they be then used
across boundaries as well??
 
Imagine not, if you go to Pittsboro from Durham you buy Pittsboro dollars and spend them locally thus boosting Pittsboro's local economy and if you want to support local businesses in Durham as a resident then buy Durham dollars and spend in local stores , the big cats like Walmart if they had a branch in Durham or Pittsboro would not be part of the scheme so in essence you are helping the little guy out and not the Corporate Giants.

Or in the olden days, the pound was a city/county operated facility for lost or stray dogs. Usually had a negative association.
 
As in 'pound the beat' - or walking the area; a phrase still occasionally used of the constabulary when on foot.
 
Talking about local businesses there is a nice little article on the BBC News pages today about an artist Eleanor Crow who has painted pictures of some of the oldest and historic shops in London and added a few sentences to give a potted History of each shop . It got me thinking, it would be a nice idea to have local artists to do the same in our cities , towns and villages before these old shops disappear . I am sure that in your various locations Members there are some old iconic shops which would be nice to have painted or drawn and preserved in the memory for all time . In the article my favourite building of all is Syd's Original Coffee Stall its a great story .

Any artists in Holmfirth area could start by painting /sketching Kaye's [any chance we could get Claye across or get him to sketch from a photograph?]

Hey happyjack, those dyno roders would come under the caption of plumbers. Hands up all those who have had to play patience whilst waiting for a plumber to turn up. We had some new taps dropped off by a plumber who was coming back with a new washbasin in three days time. That was 15 months ago. We didn't pay for the taps, they were to be charged for in the final bill. I think he must have won the lottery. :13:
 
Reading through the earlier posts on this thread. I could not help but envision some gent a few streets over from Dick eagerly opening up a parcel he received. Then saying something like 'Eh, up Gromit. Someone's sent me the wrong trousers!"
