His Edie died about 1972, he would have been 21 in 1942 (from First of dates) - so 30 years. Long enough to give him sufficient experience of how to handle women.
Interestingly he once assumes flannelette causes impotence. In the earlier episodes he is quite mischievous and he is regarded with surprise by Blamire when he says he had all the years marital combat experience when he risks the spleen of Ivy. Also in Flower Power Cut. But he turns into a wilting wallflower later on - possibly his dalliance with Marina in the lift?

Something like 47 years rings the proverbial bell - started at 15 would take him to 62, possible - or was it 37 years? That would take him to 52 which would fit with Blamire leaving military service (get impression he was a civilian attached to military for a few years) - because by 1972 lino was going out of fashion!
