Back in the day, they let new mothers stay in hospital and rest for a week before sending them back to the challenges of motherhood and homemaking. When my sister was born, in 1950, I was the only female in the household while my mother was in hospital, and I expected to prepare the meals for my father and grandfather. I was only nine years old, and although I knew how to prepare each component of several meals, I had no idea how to control the timing so everything was ready at once.
