Bill Owen's Autobiography

Getting thru it slowly as there is just so much to absorb.

The first 3/4 or so is from birth to the late 1960's.
And Bill writes just like he talks -- as Bill not as
Compo. If you have watched the 25- or 30-year
special you know what I mean.

Then comes Summer Wine!!!

Right now I am reading thru the original script for
Of Funerals and Fish, but I have to stop now and then to
wipe away a tear. This is so overwhelming!! It's more
poignant than watching it!! I have to stop now and
again to reclaim reality. That script is bloody
brilliant!!

I wish I could read it too and understand what you are talking about, in fact I have been looking for the book on ebay, but I wasn´t successful, and anyway, at the moment I´m saving up pretty hard ;). Enjoy and let us know more about it, please!

Thank you, Susan, I´ll definitely keep looking there. At the moment it´s just not on for my purse, I´m like Foggy ;).

I would like to read this book as well,I own Peter Sallis book fading into the limelight so it would nice to have Bills book too.

I have seen Summer Wine and Vintage Years by Bill Owen for anything
from $5.99 to $500 over the net. Just gotta keep looking. I got mine
thru amazon.com in the US for about $15 US but have since
seen it cheaper.

About finished with Bill's autobiography. All told, more
about Bill and way less about his tour on summer wine.

Were I a real fan of Bill Owen, actor, singer, writer, etc,
I would really love this book. But as a dyed-in-the-wool
fan of Compo Simmonite ... not so much. It's almost
like LOTSW did not matter very much to Bill. Very
very little SW is mentioned.

Ah well. I did read it.

It is odd that so many many of us around the world would have
no idea who Bill Owen is were it not for LOTSW. Yet there are
a bazillion of us who really loved Compo, and we are not really
addressed in Bill's book. Almost like he did not car much for SW.

In the last page or two, he claims that Yorkshire is his "home."

But only there.

Not sure that he gives adequate credit ....

Summer Wine was not his whole life and to him, the eary days very much are linked with his own philosophy of life, so he wants people to know that there was a substantial acting experience prior to SW. The early stuff is inked with his left wing views and he was very strong about these. (probably get abnend from a forum!)

He is buried in Yorkshire and he often supported events in Holmfirth, even when not filming.

Peter Sallis, is much the same - a whole raft of acting prior to SW thus his book covers all of his career.
