A Nice Day For It

Twixt Christmas and New Year I attended a heritage walk in Newcastle . I have been a member of the heritage walking group run by Newcastle City Guides since I retired from work years ago. I knew nowt about my home city and since joining I have learned a lot but I continue to learn more .

On this short walk I was astonished to discern that the statue of Cardinal Hume at the majestic Catholic Cathedral stands on stone quarried from Lindisfarne and the large stone plinth the statue stands on is the shape of Lindisfarne Island itself . I have walked across that area many times , sat having a drink in the Townwall pub opposite staring across at the statue and I never realised that it was so .

Further on in the walk we were treated to an area with Farmyard connotations which was in fact a dairy[ It conjured memories of The Early Bird and Sir Norman Wisdom ]which has been tastefully restored and some statues of truffle hunting pigs . In an adjacent street this beautiful building remains in situ , it was once a bonded warehouse and it sits next to an historic Jewish graveyard hidden from view behind inaccessible gates , Two doors up is the stage door of the Tyne Theatre where the group were asked why the stage doors were so tall [I knew the answer from a previous tour] most were puzzled until it was divulged that not only actors, musicians and comedians pass through them but also scenery for shows.
