Kathy Staff in Some Enchanted Evening

I've seen it on youtube, and maybe once on my local PBS TV station. It's not available on DVD here in the United States. The last 4 episodes from the Cyril Blamire years for some reason haven't been put on DVD yet. I think this is a gross oversight on the part of BBC America, and I hope these...

    Favorite one-off characters

How could I forget Eric Sykes as Doggie Wilkinson in "The 2nd Stag Night Of Doggie Wilkinson"? He played the part of a fumbling drunk to a tee! The trio carrying him home, tied down in Auntie Wainright's cart, only to have him fall out anyway, was pure hilarity!

    Favorite one-off characters

I'm talking about characters that lasted maybe one or two episodes and were never heard from again. I liked the waitress in the boarding house when the trio went to Scarborough in the two-parter of "The Great Boarding House Bathroom Caper" and "Cheering Up Gordon". She was cranky in a funny...

    Worst Semi-Regular(s)/Worst Regular Character(s)

The two librarians from the first few series, Mr. Wainright and Miss Probert, I found rather annoying. A good thing they were short-lived on the show.

    More funny lines

Pretty much anything Truly can connect to "the former Mrs. Truelove" is guaranteed to get some laughs!

    Howard and Clegg

What about the episode where Howard bought a trackbike, only to have it stored at Clegg's house? I'm going to say it was "Elegy for Small Creature And Clandestine Trackbike", but I might be wrong on that one.

"The Great Boarding House Bathroom Caper" Where Foggy goes for a swim before breakfast, only to be feel frigid cold.

    Celebrity fans

If there's any truth to that, what sort of character could Pierce play? He's always played the dashing, uber-masculine hero on TV and movies, so I can't imagine him really tapping into his humorous side. Granted, I know he was in the movie comedy "Mrs. Doubtfire", but he really played the...

    Was Compo an ale drinker?

Compo's drinking habits struck me as rather opportunistic, in that if he drank whatever someone else paid for. It was beer most of the time, but I do remember him taking a bit of whiskey as well. I don't recall if he ever paid for a round, but if he did, feel free to correct me. Also, to those...

the last surviving main LOTSW characters

And by that, I mean the two actors who have been in every episode from the beginning -- Peter Sallis and Jane Freeman. Does anyone know what they have been up to since LOTSW's cancellation? I would imagine they've long since retired, but don't know for sure.

    See ya Compo

I still can't watch the trio of episodes regarding Compo's passing without feeling this huge twinge of sadness in my heart. I've only seen them once, and that was enough for me. To say Compo was such an iconic and pivotal character in LOTSW would be the understatement of the year. The post-Compo...

an observation of Compo & Nora

an observation of Compo & Nora Just recently, I watched the early Blamire episodes for what seems like the millionth time. It never gets old to me. Anyway, I noticed that, in those early episodes, Compo didn't refer to Nora on a first-name basis, but rather as "Mrs. Batty". At what point did...

    Worst Semi-Regular(s)/Worst Regular Character(s)

For me, the 2 least favorite LOTSW characters that come to mind were the librarians -- Miss Probert and Mr. Wainright. The mannerisms of both characters just annoyed me for some reason.

    musings about Edie Pegden

Do you think it would be safe to say the character of Edie Pegden had a bit of an OCD complex? You reflect on things like how she always put newspaper down whenever Wesley entered the house or sat on a chair, the way she fastidiously kept the house in immaculate condition, the way she checked...

the music blaring from Wesley's Land Rover

I remember hearing what I think could've passed for the sound of Thin Lizzy or Iron Maiden with the twin guitars playing in harmony with each other. Was that an actual band in real life who's music was borrowed for the show, or was it especially recorded for the show? Also, I don't recall if I...

    Favourite scene.

There are so many favorite scenes in the show. With a picturesque town like Holmfirth, it's hard to pick just one that stands out. However, I keep coming back to "Ballad For Wind Instruments And Canoe" for the beautiful scenes of the trio rowing down a river. I also loved the beach scenes in...

When did you prefer the theme tune?

My favorite version of the LOTSW theme song was during the mid 1990's during Foggy's 2nd run on the show when they changed the ending. The end bit used to be a string orchestra giving way to a lone accordion playing a simple melody up until that point. After which, it was an accordion followed...

Is nostalgia of the show kicking in now

If you're asking if we're feeling nostalgic about LOTSW, then I guess we all would be to some degree. Perhaps some of us miss the show more than others, and to watch repeats on cable TV or DVD kind of drives that point home. This is why I'm upset at my local public television station here in the...

    musical instruments

I recall seeing Barry with a piano and saxophone, Howard with a double bass, the trio with recorders, so can anybody else recall episodes where musical instruments played an important role to particular characters? Wasn't there somebody who played the flute to attract birds? Edited to note...
