If/When should the series have ended?

I'm a completionist and have the whole series on DVD, so when I watch it (I am at the moment) I go all the way through to the end, just skipping a few episodes along the way that I never liked. I don't dislike the later years enough to skip them completely, and as mentioned above there are a...

If/When should the series have ended?

Based on what happened after, I would have ended the show after Series 24. That's right before Alvin became a regular. I like Alvin, but his arrival corresponds with Peter Sallis' taking a significantly reduced role on the show and that's when it goes off the rails for me. There are good...

    Michael Aldridge/Seymour

Alan Bell's book confirms they had planned to bring Seymour back in occasional guest appearances (that's why the character is said to be only moving 20 or 30 miles away) but due to his wife's illness they didn't find a way to do that before he passed away in 1994 at 73.. Not to question his...

Another puzzle for us ????......regarding Corporal Dewhurst....

Yes, this is what happened. Andrew Vine's book makes that clear. Series 3 was all written and ready to go with Michael Bates as Blamire but he couldn't do it so they brought in Foggy. Its clear most of the episodes in that series were just quick swaps of names and a few added scenes...

Did Truly Help Prolong Last of the Summer Wine

I've always found it interesting that LOTSW survived as long as it did. Somehow it weathered the storms that inevitably kill off other long running shows. The biggest storm was when Bill Owen passed, and in that case I'm sure that having Truly on board helped with that. Had Foggy's second...

Did Truly Help Prolong Last of the Summer Wine

Alan Bell didn't believe this. In his book he says Peter Fincham, BBC One controller from 2005-7, told him he was committed to the show and that gave Bell the confidence to finally shift the show to a younger trio centered on Hobbo. The problem was that during the filming of Series 30 Fincham...

    Characters in Episode Titles

I presume the titles reflect whatever Clarke thought was a good quick and perhaps funny or notable aspect of that episode. I doubt there was any method to it. I do wonder if how they rolled off the tongue was a factor. For example, the Series 3 episode "The Kink in Foggy's Niblick" works...

Andrew Vine's Book is it worth getting?

Vine's book is worth it as it covers the shows creation, something Alan Bell wasnt around for. Make sure you get the updated version, though. After the show ended he added a chapter or two as the original release was in the early 2000s.

    The wrong Wally?

As I'm sure many know, Nora wasn't originally supposed to be a major character on Last of the Summer Wine. She wasn't really supposed to appear after the pilot opening scene, but test audiences liked her so Roy Clarke used her in a few episodes of Series 1 and the rest is history. In the...

    Why the ties?

It is interesting that while the trio, Howard, and Wally followed the dress code idea, Sid and Wesley really never did even though the show presented them as being from the same generation.

    Why the ties?

I have always assumed that it represented their generation, though Roy Clarke may have exaggerated the prevalence of it. Certainly my grandfather (of that generation but American) didn't get caught up on wearing ties but I do remember other older men when I was young who wore ties pretty much...

    Memorable Props

That explains the wobble when it goes down the stairs but ends up right side up at the end (though that is a separate shot so I assume it didn't happen quite that way). Never occurred to me it was made of foam.

That is a great story. I am glad you shared it!

    Here puddy puddy puddy

At least two. The first Christmas special shows one outside Clegg's door at the end of the episode. Then the above episode where Howard is petting a cat. Oddly, a year or two later Howard and Pearl supposedly have a cat when Howard is supposed to dog sit, but we never see it.

    News flash!

It's likely that first floor has always been a kitchen. Remember, they never filmed inside this location. Only outside. The scenes we saw inside were studio sets. That is true of most of the show's locations. They did film inside Sid's a few times, but even that was mostly a studio set...

    Sid's cafe is ............open !!!!

Yeah, on Facebook they said they aren't opening until next month so I don't think those were Sid's customers.

    Cast Remembered

Yeah, I'm aware of Linsley's weight loss. Bell covers the whole thing in his book, for example. I just wonder if they never officially bothered writing Crusher out because they thought maybe Linsley's weight loss would be temporary and figured he might return. Or, since Bell talks about...

    Cast Remembered

I hadn't heard that story but in his book Bell says Wilde agreed at one point in the early 2000s to make a guest appearance but quickly changed his mind. It's an odd thing for Bell to talk about because in the book his previous reference to Wilde is pretty negative pertaining to his departure...

    Cast Remembered

There is an episode in the Seymour years where Compo says he dated a Cyril once. I like to think it was a reference to Blamire! Crusher's last appearance was in "Big Day at Dream Acres" and he didn't appear in the following series, with "Crums" airing a year later. Based on Bell's book, my...
