The Red Dwarf sitcom is due to air a three part series, late 2025. Nowhere near as many episodes though and had switched to Dave after the BBC had retired the series and a long gap between series, this I think (technically) would overtake Summer Wine as the longest running British sitcom.
 
Starting to suffer from some of the issues LOTSW cast had . Getting older , Cat needs a syrup , crew need larger size costumes , Kryten's memory and IQ definitely on the wane, Boys from the Dwarf is a bit of a stretch , Lister's locks more horse hair than his own but what the hell I can't wait and if its three episodes certainly far better than none . :)
 
Shows can look tired when the cast look old and tired. Only Fools had this problem at the end.

It makes you realise that they should have made shows when they were younger, when the 'formula' was still there.

LOTSW didn't have this problem, as such, because they never had big gaps between series, and more importantly, it was a show about getting older anyway.
 
Sad news, captain.

A bit of a strange article that is dated yesterday Sep 8th 2025. They say that the Red Dwarf special was commissioned back in Jan 2023. Then go on to say that UKTV axed it a few months later. So... around mid 2023 I'm guessing.

They are just now telling us two something years after the fact in late 2025 about the cancellation as if it is late breaking news that happened last week ?!? The article goes on to say the news comes out two months after Charles Augins who played the character Queeg in an early RD episode passed. That confirms they must have been sitting on the cancellation news all this time.

I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Augins passed. He played a great character. Unsure if they are mentioning him because he had an upcoming part in the new RD special or because he had recently passed.
 
I feel for the writers clearly they have expended a lot of effort and had written a lot of material , I read that Doug Naylor had signed a contract so he will get paid for his efforts thus far but I wouldn't imagine Craig, Chris, Danny and Robert had signed anything so won't receive anything .

The show is now in the position of Frasier the reboot which seems to have no success in securing a broadcaster to make the show . I do hope that Doug Naylor might try similar but I just cannot think of a company who would take it on , we only got extended viewing when Dave, or U and Dave, as it's known as now took up the challenge.

Thankfully I have everything available to me from every series [like LOTSW] which is of great comfort to me . As you say why sit on the news after building up expectation amongst fans rather cruel . I wonder if we'd have known now if Doug Naylor hadn't have decided to go public.

Queeg is one of my favourite early episodes , Charles Augins was not a prolific actor I think he was more the other side of the camera and is probably best known for his dance choreography I imagine it's his connection to the show that he gets a mention.

I'm not smoking any smegging kippers because it looks like the dwarfers won't be back any time soon for breakfast :mad:
 
If they would have said something about the cancellation a few years ago when there was hype about producing a new RD special. They might have had more support in fan crowd source funding. Naylor should have the rights to the show and his word product to do a Go-Fund-It drive. Now the fans most likely are more disappointed with the whole thing. :-/

The "Firefly" tv series fans were able to rally together and get a full length follow up movie called "Serenity" produced. There was enough momentum at the time to produce 3 more series of "The Expanse" tv show by Bezos after the Sci-Fi Channel did not renew. Who knows, if Musk or Bezos are big Red Dwarf fans they might have helped get it produced.

There's added complications that come into play such as Chris Barrie's recovery from an unspecified illness. We should take solace in the fact we had a decent revival and although it's true glory days were on the BBC the Dave era was an enjoyable, comforting watch.
 
I feel for Doug Naylor all that effort , writing most of what was asked of him only for some numbskull no mark from U and Dave to turn around and say thanks but we are changing direction and we won't be making this type of show any more . It's just not cricket is the polite way of saying what I'd love to say to whoever made the decision , I spare you the detail of I'd really like to say :mad:

Sadly this isn't uncommon, nor a new issue.
After 'Citizen Smith' ended in 1980 writer by John Sullivan had an idea for a football based sitcom. A pilot episode was filmed, and was commissioned for a series. But BBC1 controller Bill Cotton had not seen the pilot - when he did he cancelled the series. By the time John Sullivan was told that the series was being cancelled he had already written the fourth episode of ‘Over the Moon’.

Luckily the BBC had a gap in their schedule & asked Sullivan if he could dig out a previously rejected idea about a market trader & his younger brother...
