Gentle Comedies - The Definitive Guide

New kid on the block to add here and it's the very new but but very funny Only Child with Rab C Nesbitt himself Gregor Fisher alongside Greg Mchugh, some of the language is far from gentle but somehow the warmness of this works well.

I would also add to the list George Cole's My Good Friend, Dad and The Bounder.

I'm halfway through s3 of ATGB, I find them a bit hit and miss. They are genuinely funny in parts and definitely meet the criteria of a gentle comedy. The Alistair character gets up my nose a bit, but I'm guessing his character may be designed to be annoying!

I do like Lionel s curmudgeonly moods sometime they do make me chuckle, whilst Dame Judy is undoubtedly an amazing actress I struggle again with her character. I'm definitely going to persevere through the entire series as they certainly and easy watch.

At this point, you've met Penny and Stephen. My favorite episodes are the ones with them. A lot of people get irritated by some of Jean's characteristics, such as nosiness. I love that character since I just look for laughs more than attachments to certain characters. I lost track if I mentioned this before, but my wife and I are very much like a younger version of Lionel and Jean.
 
Thanks, codfanglers, I had forgotten about those two. Although she could be overbearing at times I do like Stephen's character. Thinking on it now he reminds me a little of Howard (of LotSW) and Richard (of Keeping up Appearances). The show did well on bringing in interesting characters to the show.

When it comes to comedies, I often like annoying characters. Penny, Jean, and KUA's Hyacinth can all be considered annoying. But that is part of the comedy.

I'm not sure if it belongs on this thread, but, There was a short lived comedy called "Bloomers", not laugh out loud funny but undemanding, I believe it came to a halt due to the very early passing of Richard Beckinsale.
 
Bloomers is a good one, Denton. I recognized the flower shop owner from a Rising Damp episode. You are right that it ended because Richard passed from a heart attack before rehearsal for the sixth and final episode. The series was then shelved yet released for broadcast.
 
Anyone know much about A Sharp Intake of Breath S1 Ep.1 - Your Life In Their
Starring David Jason, Jacqueline Clarke, Richard Wilson, Alun Armstrong.
On youtube - thumbnail shows David Jason .. only a few episodes on the channel = was it a failure? or are there more episodes to find... ?
 
I found it a very entertaining and funny show well worth watching but I have read that David Jason doesn't view it fondly and wont sanction TV repeats which is a great shame however, UK Gold did somehow show episodes a number of years ago but don't recall seeing it scheduled recently so perhaps DJ is still digging in his heels .
 
It's ok enough but never really cememented David as a star fully as a cetain Peckham flat was calling at the end of it's 3 year run. Some nice early appearences from Richard Wilson and Alun Armstrong too.

There were four series - 22 episodes (including a pilot broadcast 28 July 1977) - broadcast on ITV, from 20 February 1978 to 15 February 1981. Season 3 in 1980 only had 3 episodes, they were repeated in August 1981. No other repeats appear to have been broadcast. (Series 3 was abandoned after episode 3, following the death of writer Ronnie Taylor, Vince Powell wrote series 4.)

addendum: "No other repeats appear to have been broadcast" according to two reliable archive sources.
