Episodes that make you Wonder

My example is the episode Camera Shy

1. Foggy is sold a VHS camera by Auntie, did she charge it up for him, which I doubt, these devices back in the day ate batteries, so how and when did he charge it
2. Compo was sold a stuffed owl in a case, when the trio were running from Eli's dog and going down the banking, the box with the owl in can be seen left at the top, we never see it again, so was it abandoned by Compo

What episode scenes leave you wondering

The episode Is Jeremy Quite Safe? makes me wonder or should I say is not really plausible. Firstly we see Aunties outdoor section (not sure we see this in any other episodes) She has a safe out there which I know of that size must weigh around 100 kg, how did Auntie get that back inside as the area wasn't covered. Also the 3 of them manage to move it to the scene by the tree, which must be 50 ft high and they've managed to loop the rope over one of the tallest branches!

Most if not all of the water based episodes are somewhat baffling , the Swan boat caught on Tommy Cannon's long boat could only snag the rope on the propeller which would have caused the long boat to stop and all the sheninagans with Alvin trying to swing out to rescue the Swan boat . Seymour's sub, well given the craftsmen involved in building the real thing , one man manages to construct a metal vessel that's waterproof just not feasible .

I was there when filming Alvin swinging out to the swan, they used something like a fork lift truck, which the rope was actually fixed to and not a tree, also a stuntman used for the actual swing onto the swan, there was also divers in the water to make sure everyone was safe, it was a good day meeting Cannon & Ball who were very entertaining during filming breaks

On the subject of water based episodes, in Tarzan & The Towpath when Compo is pulling Truly & Clegg's boat via a rope from the towpath the vessel not only moves but keeps to the centre of the canal. Even with my rudimentary physics knowledge, I'm pretty sure that would simply pull the boat to the verge and is unlikely to move. Perhaps someone with a more mechanical mind could confirm this?

You're right. Canal boat tow ropes are attached partway back along the side of the boat. I can't remember how far back though.

Many thanks to a couple of HF Holidays British canal history holidays for that factoid.

Barry the rudder keeps a canal barge in the center

Here we go into episode presents us with a last name for Compo that’s not simmonite

I wonder what Nora did with Wally’s dog and pigeons after he died… they never mention them again

And what happened to Babs? If she loves Compo so much she looked him up why don’t we see her again?

And why the sniveling rat faced Howard was never murdered is way beyond me! Nobody liked him and pearl had ample opportunity to poison the little coward

I found the talk on towing a boat / barge interesting and looked it up some more. Thankfully we are not the only ones to wonder about it. Seems the line connects about 1/3 of the way down the boat while someone also steers with the rudder.

Some talk about it and a few neat videos here:

Thanks @Eli’sComing you also make some very salient points there!

The only one I'd slightly disagree with is Howard, I think he was a well loved character, certainly by the audiences and I remember Alan J Bell even confirming this when I went to a laughter track screening. I would certainly say Mr Partridge was a sniveling rat but not Howard. I think the premise of his relationship with Marina was very innocent, I even remember and interview with Juliette Kaplan saying deep down Pearl always knew he never had the courage to get up to any mischief with Marina!

I don’t know I guess it’s just me
He just seems to have far fewer redeeming qualities than all the other characters
I just don’t really believe that Howard would be living in that part of Yorkshire very long before the fine and decent folks there would just banish him to wales or maybe Manchester
But please carry on, pointing to the various incongruities and apparent paradoxes of the show
After so many many years there’s bound to be a few
It’s a good idea for a thread

Howard and his Bicycle, I cannot imagine Pearl letting him keep it in the front room, plus you never see it parked there, yet in several episodes
he dashes in and out the house very quickly, coming out with his bicycle, in fact in the episode Barry in danger from reading and Aunt Jessie, he waits for Pearl and Nelly to drive away, dashed in a collects his bicycle and sets of without shutting the door

Pearl kept Howard's bicycle locked up in the spare bedroom in one episode. Think it was upstairs too.

Maybe, he usually kept the bicycle out the back side of the house. Where we see him flung through a window in another episode. I would hate to have to take a bicycle up and down the stairs at their place. I'd have a few scrapes on the walls!

In the episode The Defeat of The Stoneworm I remember seeing Howard's bike in the basement.

The Second Stag Night of Doggy Wilkinson
After Doggy falls off the table and the boys help him outside. Why doesn't Clegg appear?.

Plenty of Room in The Back
Alvin is there when the boys come across Tom and Smiler in their new transport. He is not shown when the boys pass the Police car. He does not go into the pub with the others and when they have taken 'Granddad' out to the hearse 'he' is shown with his back to the camera and moves behind the vehicle and deliberately ducks down out of sight.

The Second Stag Night: Clegg is also less visible (possibly even it was his double) when Doggy is being transported on the handcart - I'm suspecting Peter Sallis was omitted to give him a rest.

Plenty of Room: Not sure about the police car scene, but the scene outside the pub is fairly well away from the regular locations, so I suspect that it was not deemed necessary to have Brian Murphy travel all that way just to stand there and say nothing.

That could be true or maybe Brian Murphy had other commitments when they shot that scene. As a character I think Alvin always had a lot to say. :)
