Greetings to all and here is this weeks installment of the 'battle of the episodes' series.

The link this week??

First appearances for later characters who then became part of the intrepid trio.

On offer are what I consider to be three excellent episodes from what is the fourth or fifth incarnation of the show.

Billy, Entwistle and Alvin all went on to play big parts in the third/fourth quarters of the show.

So...have a ponder, watch the episodes, cast a vote and have a gab amongst yourselves.

Now, I realise there is a timeline anomaly here as Entwistle appeared in the episode of 'a musical passing for a miserable Muscroft' BUT, his first proper episode where he became cemented and introduced was 'Ancient Eastern Wisdom' so I've gone with that one.

Just has to be the lair of the Cat Creature for me shows Truly at his devious best and newcomer Alvin gets taken in hook line and sinker . I love when he produces the gun and after the initial shock Truly beautifully underplays the moment and passes it off as basically " so be it someone is going to get shot with a dart gun " I love the scene where Barry, Smiler, Tom and Billy are looking for a volunteer to imitate the big cat and I am absolutely creased every time at Smiler's attempt . I know the plot has similarities with Destiny and Six Bananas Foggy chasing down the gorilla/monkey and Alvin the large cat but both are equally funny . :)

I have to say at this stage, Lair of the Cat Creature and The secret scar of Nora Batty are both in my top 20 episodes of all time and I'm having read trouble splitting them.

Robin Hood for me Inky.....we first meet " the direct relative of Robin Hood"...on his mother's side..."she were a Bristow"....as he puts a hole in Truly's hat.....the distain on Cleggy's face when he finds out that Billy was "aiming for a rabbit" not Truly's hat
The great scene in the pub when Billy drunkenly exclaims "he's a bit gobby this landlord...he must be a relation of the Sherriff of Nottingham"...then proceeds to demolish the lights and the pub sign at The White Horse.
Nora fawning over "Mr Flynn....sorry...Mr.Hardcastle" in the cafe......Smiler [a.k.a Little John] all in black...with a BIG feather in his hat...and Howard shouting "OH NO...IT'S THE SHERRIFF OF NOTTINGHAM !!!" when he saw Pearl.......a wonderfully madcap episode !!!.

I couldn't have said it better if I'd tried with a full encyclopedia in front of me Moody!!
I love Lair of the Cat Creature, BUT, Billy added an absolutely new dimension of stupidity to the show, just when it was needed.
The secret scar is a grand episode and ranks up there amongst the best of the later series., It got my vote too.

I love Lair of the Cat Creature, BUT, Billy added an absolutely new dimension of stupidity to the show,

Billy added a new dimension of stupidity to the Lair of the Cat creature, love the closing shot with freeze frame as they are carrying the semi-conscious Billy and he roars one last time as the no longer mysterious cat creature .

Cat Creature with Eastern Wisdom a close tying second and Nora's Scar right on their heels. A photo finish horse race for me, like them all equally well. :)
