Strange Caterpillar

I found this caterpillar on a beech tree in my local woods but have no idea what it is. I am pretty good with moths and butterflies but this one has me stumped. Are there any experts out there?

I'm not sure either Stephen, but I wouldn't pick it up if I were you!

Lol Thanks for the advice, Barry. I didn't pick it up. It looked like the kind of thing that Clegg or Compo would claim was crawling on Foggy's cap. Think I might try and send the pic of to some nature site somewhere. They might know. Thanks anyway.

Looks like a 'pale tussock' to me Stephen. They are to be found on deciduous trees at this time of year.

Hi Peri. Great reply.. I did think it was one of the Tussock moths but I did not see the usual tufts that that caterpillar has. I have since been told that it could be a migrant species. I am still looking into it. Thanks anyway.
