At my daughters house they had recorded a 1 hr Channel 5 Cop Show, while waiting for a delayed heating engineer to call, I watched it for something to kill the time, it was a 1hr show and with the adverts skipped it took it down to 45 minutes, but the show had a 4 minute lead in,showing you what's coming in the show, a 1 minute ending of what's on next time, plus another total of 2 minutes made up from after the advert break they would skip back to what you have last seen, so from 1 hour you have 38 minutes of content, now are they struggling to get advertisers, hence the long lead in and reviews after breaks, or is this normal these days, not having TV at home I don't know

Many of the shows from the '50's and early '60's were longer as they required fewer commercials. Now, minutes are being chopped out with critical scenes being deleted to make room for more commercials. Another ploy with current shows is to load up the commercial break at 10 minutes before the hour. Then there is a .5 second break between shows with truncated closing credits to get you into watching the next show without you realizing it.

I'd also be interested to know from those who know the LOTSW better than me, are they truncated when shown on Drama, UK Gold etc for the adverts?

I have heard they are editing out little bits, that today folk would find offensive

Of course, PBS (American) blurred out the racy calendar in the barber shop and all other racy pictures. And there was that shower scene in Midsomer Murders that was also blurred out.

Unfortunately this isn't unusual. The programme In Sea and Selling Houses had a long intro, then an intro to each estate agent family involved so that it felt like the actual content was almost an afterthought.

My pet hate which I went into print about is the increasing trend of shows who spoil the surprise generated in the show by showing clips of the content at the very start , the Antiques Roadshow is a prime culprit and the one I complained about but sadly it appears my comments although shared fell on stoney ground, all of which shortens the time available for content . :(

If you watch CBS on Sky the space between each program is just adverts for their other shows at certain times of the day. Its annoying because it's the same advert all the time.

agree 500%!!!! That drives me insane, I usually go around the grounds until the show comes on... which I occasionally find something else worth watching, and miss what I intended to watch!!!!

As for the topic title - YES. but in Aussie Foxtel are in billions debt. But they dont change their business model to entice people to join.. There are so many other options these days like Netflix, etc .

That is one reason TV shows are so poor now - they have to pump how so many in such a short time... You want 24/7 TV?? Suffer

Absolutely agree, when I was little, back in the stone age, tv didn't start until dinner and ended at midnight. 4 channels and there was always something new to watch now its 24/7 wall to wall rubbish on 500 channels. I have Sky and Netflix but spent the weekend watching DVDs.

I agree there Pearl. Sometimes it's only worth turning off the TV!

I have no idea! Since I learned that all New York State residents can get a borrower's card for New York Public Library, and that NYPL has a huge collection of e-books in Kindle format, I haven't had the TV on except for my half-hour sleeping draught of older British comedy. My TIVO disc must have long ago reached the point of deleting older recordings to make room for new ones!

We've only go Freeview here in our house in the UK. Close to 50 channels and three quarters of it is a load of rubbish.

All the shows that I'm recording and not watching are broadcast by PBS. They're accompanied by a quick acknowledgement of the underwriters, but there's none of the irritating, sometimes insulting advertising. Most of the programs that interest me are history or science documentaries, spiced with a few British shows like Midsomer Murders and Father Brown.

Wow I love Father Brown, I'm so glad that's made it over to the US, I think it's our answer to Murder She Wrote :D Mind you I wouldn't want to live in his parish!!!!

As an avid fan of the Fast Show it's really hard seeing Mark Williams as Father Brown I find myself adding one of his tag lines from the Fast Show to his lines from Father Brown like Nice Man below or Jesse with his "Today I will be mostly eating ........."

I am an avid Fast Show fan watched it avidly and watched both anniversary shows on Gold . I have so many favourite characters Mark Williams as Jesse , Paul Whitehouse as Roly Birkin and John Thomson as Louis Allsop the Jazz Club Man . I love the Bob Fleming take on Jack Hargreaves and his Out of Town show the coughing fit just makes me cry with laughter and the album he allegedly created is just such a funny sketch especially having added other characters with similar afflictions .
