Glenda's Kitchen

I have often thought that Barry and Glenda's kitchen must be tiny, looking at the door from the hallway, the staircase would take any height out of the kitchen, making it very small, I am sure there are later episodes showing a decent kitchen interior, but it's just not possible if you look at the picture below

I'm just trying to do the dimensions myself, perhaps there is an arch underneath the stairs and the kitchen is the other side! Either that or its a TARDIS kitchen
 
In Estate agent speak it would be bijoux ideal for the economic cook on the go dare I say you could describe it as the Luncheonette for the power couple . In our world it would being not big enough to swing a cat in
 
I always figured the kitchen was to the left under the stairs and towards the front of the house. Does seem like an odd design. There are some other indoor shots showing the length of the hallway wall which might equal the length of the kitchen. Still seems on the small side. I would think the kitchen entrance would have been better being opposite the garage entrance / nearer the front door. Leaving the space under the stairs for storage / cupboard area.

Forget the episodes but there is one with Barry and some golf gear standing in the hallway. Which shows the hallway and possible kitchen space on the right looking towards the front of the house. Also one with Barry and Glenda on the phone in the hallway. Think Barry is telling Glenda not to let the person on the phone that Barry might be wanting to go golfing.

Judging from the site of the stairs and the outside of the house, the stairs are up against the outside wall, so it's impossible for the kitchen to be any further back than that. Are there any scenes where we are actually inside the kitchen? I can't think of any.

While we're on this subject, I'm also confused as to which is Nora Batty's kitchen window and which is Compo's bedroom window. I always understood the window to the right of the door was Nora's kitchen,, seen in many episodes, but in Uncle of the Bride, it is this window Nora knocks on with her clothes prop to get Compo's attention to collect his parcel from the postwoman. And we've seen Compo lean out of the bedroom window many times too.

In "Cry at Weddings" they have an entire scene in the kitchen. The hatch is omitted as mentioned above and the kitchen seems to be normal size.

For the location of Nora's kitchen window and Compo's bedroom window, they did a camera sleigh of hand making them look closer than they really were.
 
............... Or it 's a continuity error or the hatch frame is just stuck on the living room wall to give the impression there was a hatch for filming but when the house was handed back to to owners it was simply removed

Did they film inside the actual house or was that a set?
 
I think all the inside shots were filmed in a studio. On this subject I was always trying to work out whether the layout of Alvins house we see in latter episodes was the same as Compo's house? It was certainly a lot smarter!

We still have a serving hatch in our house and we still use it regularly. We wouldn't be without it. But then, sometimes we are old fashioned!

Apologies, it was my failed attempt at humour! And in fairness I think even hostess/drink trolleys are even making a comeback with the new love of gin people seem to have!
I can hardly call myself a purveyor of modern house fashion as I have flying ducks up my wall, but not a 'Muriel' as Hilda Ogden used to call it :p
 
Apparently we're to believe that Barry and Glenda never intended to use their serving hatch. If they had, they would have put their dining room furniture at that end of the room, and the lounge furniture at the other end. Instead, they prioritized the cozy lounge effect created by the placement of the fireplace over efficient meal service. The golf captain's house, next door, had the same interior arrangement, and he made the same choice for his lounge furniture placement.

No problem Barry. I was just illustrating the fact that not everyone is up with these modern trends.
