I had noticed that line too but not thought much about it. Now will keep an eye out for what is on the other end when they show the full street.

I think its the washing line , discoloured by the weather and grime , that Gordon Stackpole returned and got his money back Arkwright put it there as a sort of tribute to the only person who he gave a refund to and perhaps as a warning...
Agree with you that the Compo trilogy episodes can really pull on the heart strings. Goes to show how good the other actors and writing really are to be able to handle Bill's passing as a much loved actor and character.

You can see it especially on Peter's face how difficult it was but I think adding humor was the right thing to do, I know especially " up North " humor is a big part of funerals, it's how the grief is dealt with.

A couple of years back attended a Fawlty Towers themed meal with all the characters at the then Theatre Royal restaurant in Newcastle it was brilliantly manic and the food was quite good.
