A couple of weeks ago my main computer motherboard died on me, I purchased a new one, though a little down-market. It niggled me for a couple of reasons, firstly it was a particularly good and fairly new board and secondly because I was convinced the only problem was with what is called the BIOS chip. All the symptoms pointed at the chip going pear-shaped.
A few days ago I made inquiries to BIOS chip replacement centres and found the average price was about £55.00 NOT guaranteed.
I eventually convinced myself to go ahead and attempt the replacement myself. I am an experienced soldering iron user but my eyesight is...... well let's just say it's not as it was.
I found a supplier who could supply the correct chip and, bless him, could also burn the correct BIOS onto the chip. I brought myself some Shenzhen watch-makes magnifying thingies and routed out the 0.1mm soldering iron tip (the chip is 4.5mm wide with pins about 0.6mm).
To the point: IT WORKED, motherboard fully functional again, and I'm so please with myself
