Blamire, Clegg and Compo weren't that old!

At the time of broadcast of the first episode -

Michael Bates was 51
Peter Sallis was 52
Bill Owen was 59

Surely they wouldn't have been pensioners yet!

The premise was not that they were pensioners but redundant or unemployed and thus able to indulge in youthful type pranks. Blamire's army career was over, Clegg's lino selling days had come to an end (who bought lino after 1970?) and Compo always had a bad back.

Yes, it may have been Barmpot that originally informed me that the guys were redundant rather than retired during the Blamire years.

Compo having a bad back? That is a bit considering all the crazy stunts Compo pulled over the years. Then again, there are plenty of episodes where Foggy is running with a cane!
