It appears Foggy did not come up with the idea, a group of men started the game just before WW2 and it lasted many years after the war to international standards, the cycles had no brakes and special spokes on the wheels to block the ball

There was one of these polo bikes and its accompanying mallet that was restored on the Repair Shop [Series 14 episode 5] a couple of months back . On the main titles of that series , Tim Gunn, their bicycle guy, features saying he has never seen a wheel rim quite as bent as this one which is from the Polo bike .

We saw that. I remember remarking to Dad at the time, that Foggy couldn't have invented it.
 
Can't imagine riding fixed-gear bicycles like those on anything other than the flat, level field they are on. Would be brutal to attempt the hills of Yorkshire with them.
 
Apologies but as we are talking bikes have to post this clip of a chimpanzee on a bike again . It was used on Never Mind The Buzzcocks probably 15 years ago where they alleged that you could play any piece of music with it and it just works but its just funny.
