    40 year anniversary??

There's been many of these top 50 or 100 polls over the years, sometimes voted by the public sometimes not. The BBC did one back in 2004 where the public could vote, LOTSW came 14th. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sitcom/winner.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/sitcom/top11to100.shtml

    Loxley Lozenge

Here's a thought. Wearing a front seatbelt has been compulsory in the UK since 1983. This episode is from 1984. They are not wearing seatbelts (I couldn't see the trio with any kind of belt holding them in) as the front seat of the Loxley is a makeshift settee. I'm guessing they got around the...

Just as likely rules relating to driving on a public road, insurance liability, etc. Anyway, not sure the actors would appreciate being that open in a cut down car sitting on a settee being pulled by a flimsy rope. They might have thought that the stunt of the settee coming off on its own might...

    Funniest Television Couple Ever?

Well, when it comes to US comedy I thought Married with Children was fantastic, with Al and Peggy Bundy. Basil and Cybil Fawlty were classic as were the Meldrew's. George and Mildred as well.

    40 year anniversary??

I think that is true. The classic LOTSW years are the Compo, Clegg, Foggy/Blamire/Seymour and finally Truly years. It's questionable whether the series would have survived so long had Bill Owen and Peter Sallis left to do other things when it was at its peak. They could survive the changes with...

Blamire,Seymour or Foggy?Who was the best one in the patnership with Compo and C

It's quite remarkable when you think about it how fate can be both cruel and kind that even though things worked out well in terms of the history of the third tall man in LOTSW, it could have been so different. Brian Wilde as Foggy probably wouldn't have happened had it not been for the...

    Cafe price list

I also don't recall the cafe having that many tables in it, especially in the earlier episodes. There was a central table where the trio would sit and then what looked like one at the side. The cafe wasn't very big and most of the time the trio seemed to have it to themselves. For a while the...

New Board to Alert Members about TV Shows

To be fair, it is a BBC satire, so they are having a go at themselves by presenting a view that critics would make of them. The irony is if it really was as their critics say, then a scene like that would never get past the "leftie" censors.

New Board to Alert Members about TV Shows

I've been watching a BBC comedy drama series called Ambassadors with David Mitchell and Robert Webb. I got quite a surprise when in episode 2 towards the end the President of the fictitious country Tazbekistan is in a private meeting with a British royal and tells him that his favorite British...

Blamire,Seymour or Foggy?Who was the best one in the patnership with Compo and C

Blamire and Seymour were both very good characters in their own way, but were not around long enough to challenge Foggy who fit in perfectly. I think if they had been in the series for several more years then it would have been interesting to see how their characters would have developed. Having...

    Cafe price list

What is the topic? Seems to me it is the relative cheapness of the prices on the cafe price list board and the mistaken perception we have of that "cheapness" looking at it from today's world of much higher prices. However, they can only be looked at in the context of relative inflation. They...

    foggy's ties

Further to the point above, one of the things that I share with the trio of LOTSW is a love of long walks. Like them I tend to walk everywhere. However, on long walks I would never go out wearing the type of formal dress that they do. I dress for comfort and while I don't consider myself a...

    foggy's ties

But did people have much of a choice of "casual" clothes 50+ years ago as such? This is more of a fashion that probably began in the 50's and later, growing to what it is today. Then there is tradition which fits in with things being a generational thing. In LOTSW the flat cap can still be seen...

    Edith clegg tombstone

I think it was also a question of how old do they look? They probably got away with Bill Owen being the older actor because Compo was scruffy and didn't care too much about his appearance. He could be presented as old before his time. For the most part the characters looked around the same age...

I would assume that back then the military were still in the main a do it yourself type of institution, whereas in modern times things like that will be contracted out to the private sector.

Yes it would, but after several series in which Compo is not seen smoking, suddenly we see him smoking again in series 6. I'm working my way through series 6 so it will be interesting to see if it is a one off. I also wonder when was the last time we see any of the major characters smoking in...

I recently received an email from the site which indicated that this is a blocked word because it rhymes with something else was the general gist. Rather than post the email, which it seems went to all members anyway as it was in part about the site upgrade, I'll leave it up to the mods and...

Talking of cigarettes, I watched In the Service of Humanity recently and noticed that Compo is smoking one in the cafe. This is episode 1, series 6. Compo seemed to stop smoking with the arrival and encouragement of Foggy and I don't recall seeing him with a cigarette from series 3 to 5.

Interesting your comment about mortgages back then, but I suppose the other way to look at it is that banks and building societies behaved more responsibly. They wouldn't lend to anyone and would rarely lend more than 2-3 times one salary which was usually the man's. Building societies would...
