For me there are a lot of reasons:
Firstly, it has had over the years an absolute cavalcade of comedy stars from so many different shows. Whether a cameo or guest star they all brought something to the table and as someone that acts...
My dad, from his early 40s he spent most the time in a lot of pain, has a little girl I'd seen him cry with pain and it was traumatising to see but every Sunday he'd watch Summer Wine and laugh so I used to sit next to him and watch it...
I think Wally Batty had a lot in common with Andy Capp.
I also think the John Smith's adverts had something in common with Andy Capp, Last of the Summer Wine, and anything made in the 70s with drunken old men.
While we're talking about it, George Chakiris was mentioned earlier. Anyone notice how young he looked for his age back then in 1996?
He's now 92.
And, although he does look older than he did, he still looks a lot younger than 92.
I'm sorry (BUT SINCE YOU ASKED) I thought they were excellent in Welcome to Earth. The pub scene was brilliant, where everyone is taking the michael out of Paul Bown, and Casey and Woods perfected the 'always-in-the-pub' duo.
