I've visited that region, too briefly, and here's what I recommend. The nearest rail station is Wool. The Tank Museum and Monkey World aren't very far apart. Check TripAdvisor for accommodations and Traveline for bus timetables/stops...

We are looking at trying to visit next year but Dorset is not familiar to me (would be our first UK visit!). Harder to look up (at least strategically) accommodations and transportation the way I would more populated areas. Asking...
