I noticed whilst watching a Merry Heatwave last night that ciggies were being sold behind the counter. Of course you couldn't do this now. In those days anything went I suppose.

there are a couple of packs on the shelf above the hatch in this episode... :) in the café I meant.. :D

Talking of cigarettes, I watched In the Service of Humanity recently and noticed that Compo is smoking one in the cafe. This is episode 1, series 6. Compo seemed to stop smoking with the arrival and encouragement of Foggy and I don't recall seeing him with a cigarette from series 3 to 5.

But this would also co-incide with the general concerns about smoking being more commonly expressed at the same time ...

Yes it would, but after several series in which Compo is not seen smoking, suddenly we see him smoking again in series 6. I'm working my way through series 6 so it will be interesting to see if it is a one off. I also wonder when was the last time we see any of the major characters smoking in the series.

just off the top of my head I cant recall any characters smoking in any episode from the advent of Seymour onwards...I do stand to be corrected.

Seymour was seen smoking in "Uncle of the Bride" and in "Edie and the Automobile", Howard mentioned he has cigarettes in his pocket in "Uncle of the Bride" and Wesley was seen smoking in "Happy Anniversary, Gough and Jessie" but by my reckoning that was the last time someone was seen smoking in the show but of course was mentioned in the Hobbo years seeing Stella had just stopped smoking and was struggling to carry on stopping.

The first series with Seymour showed a pipe stuck in a top pocket of his checked jacket but by the last series the pipe had gone.

I don't think that was a pipe,, I think it was his "tinkering" screwdriver.

you could be right Ron, although i'm sure this was discussed on the forum previously but can't remember what it was agreed as to what was sticking out of Seymour's pocket.

I used to think it was a pipe, then watched him in one episode remove it and hand it to Wesley to fix the gate and it was a wood handled screwdriver

Many moons ago I worked in a tobacconist (is there such a thing now since supermarkets) we would split a packet and sell five at a time. One old chap would put his 'woodbines' into a 'Senior Service' packet!!

there are still tobacconists around sue, but few and far between and usually a specialist shop in city centres...I know there is still one in leeds which focuses on pipe tobaccos and cigars but sells tobacco blends to mix for the roll your own cohort.

Yes, those types of shops in Virginia (States). Also, stores that focus exclusively on cigars.

All cigarets now covered up behind the till so most of the time you would not if shops sold them.

I remember reading or hearing an interview with Peter Sallis saying that he quit after Michael Bates (Cyril) died of lung cancer. Compo lit up the first episode with Foggy, but then after that I don't recall seeing him smoke anymore.

I think Compo smoked up till the End of series 3. But then I could be lying.
