Seems like Howard was not too far off when he mentioned the possibility of such a thing as stone worms. Some relatives of ship worms that eat wood actually do chew up rocks. The article makes it to be they live in the water instead of people's basements, thank goodness.

I thought it a joke as well at first. Here is another article from a different source about it. Amazing that something is strong enough to bite or scrape at rocks. They talk about limestone which is not the hardest of rock, but still.
