Every time I see that road on a map I wonder what about the history behind the name. Was it similar to the Preemption Line (and the associated road) that divided the aboriginal lands of western New York State awarded to New York from those awarded to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the Treaty of Hartford of 1786?
I grew up in the area near the Schuyler Country section of Preemption Road, and my father, who was interested in local history, told the story of that treaty every time we drove along it.
