Your guess of 18 was the number of different people who saw the matchbox. But remember some people saw it more than once. So the total number of viewings would be more than 18.

I decided to just give the answer as everyone is so close with the guesses.
Compo opened his matchbox to 21 sets of eyes over the years. I certainly thought it was more than that.Guess it's watching the programs over and over it seems like more.I've included a chart for those who are interested.I hope I didn't miss any, but if you find a program with the matchbox that's not on here, please let me know.After all the programs were taken off YouTube, it got harder to check them.(It wouldn't let me insert the chart, so I had to just list info. Sorry about the spacing but I give up trying to fix it.)

I just found another Match Box showing that I had missed. In the episode "The Odd Dog Men" in the café, Sid and Ivy are moving a large box into the kitchen when Foggy insists on helping. Ivy finally lets Foggy help and Sid tells Compo to grab something. He of course grabs Ivy and she shrieks. She escorts him by the scruff of his neck back to his chair and he pulls out the match box and shows it to her. Keep looking because the scenes are so short, I may have missed others too.
