Specifically, about the old van that Smiler drives, dressed in his Chinese costume. Does anyone know the make of the vehicle ? - I've never seen one. The sliding doors (especially the REAR sliding door) are unusual.

I cannot remember the name but it was identical to one that was a mobile shop around our streets in 1973/4 .Even down to the rear door!:confused2:

vintage-bedford-wedding-bus[1].jpg I've had a search around on the internet and come up with a quite similar one - a Bedford - That narrows it down a bit.

220px-Bedford_Ambulance.jpg Try this one ..........A Bedford ambulance from the 60's . Its got the long nose like Smiler's vehicle

Re the bus looks very similar to the one shown this afternoon on the very last episode of Hi De Hi the Winds of Change , that's at least three times the camp has closed - original showing plus the series was repeated twice in the last two years . I wonder if they get repeat fees and if so assume the estate of the deceased actors would benefit [ Paul Shane , Kenneth Connor, Barry Howarth, Simon Cadell, Diane Holland to name a few] ?

That looks like a Bedford OB bus, first introduced about 1950. They used one in FOSW which is a touch difficult as that was set in 1939 ....

possibly is the same one. Props people, tend to use the same few vehicles as there area limited number around.

Which one is the Bedford OB bus Rod ?? The internet gave my picture as a Bedford ambulance circa 1960.

HOD 75 is the bus, a Devon registered one if my mmory serves me well.

Actually 73 were made in 1939 but the other 12,000 or so were made 1945-1951. I think most preserved ones are postwar. Just checked nearly all are 1949-51. No actual 1939 buses remain.

Just under 0.6% of these buses have survived compared to, say, the Routemaster of which 44.5% survive - 1280 out of 2860 built. The OB was much more numerous even than the Routemaster predecessor - the RT of which thre were aabout 6,000 and only about 50 of those remain in existence now.

From the department of useless trivia .....

The Bedford OB is one of my favourite buses you often see them at rallys seats very narrow but comfortable many still about. The RT is my favourite London bus and is an icon but the Routemaster dosent do much for me didn't like em when they came out ,prefered the trolleybus much better to travel on.Afraid many think that the R/master is the London bus but watching a driver manhandle an RT was great ,my cousons husband was an instructor for LT and always prefere an RT.

The OB was widespread and used by lots of companies so the chance of findign a good example was high all over the country.

I agree the RT was, for me, the iconic London bus. Went to school on them. Quite a few were exported but obviousltyy many scrapped. There is a well known film about overhauling London buses at Aldenham and the ones in question are the RT - AEC Regent III. Lot of non LT Regents as well. I have a bus museum nearby and knwo someone who owns a half cab one so regularly get to see some of these historic buses.

Remember as a kid having an ex RT as a school bus for a while, however whether it had been the RT or Routemaster we all still tried to either jump off before it stopped or run and jump on if it had left the stop not always successfully , of course now H & S would have a field day
