Where Has Our Writing Talent Gone?

Commenting on another thread made me want to ask this question but I didn't want to hijack it so I've started this.

In recent weeks we've had new series of Endeavour and Midsomer Murders.

The first of the new series of Endeavour started with what can easily be described as a remade condensed version of The Great Gatsby, to say I was expecting Robert Redford to walk on any second is an understatement, last nights was very similar to a Sherlock Holmes I've seen. I have to wonder if the writer is losing interest in the program.

Midsomer Murders as always been a bit " Out there" but the last couple have been wayyyyy "Out there". The one before last had no murders! And last weeks was just a rehash of several other episodes. The writing is becoming very lazy and the subjects are getting more ridiculous.

What is happening to our home grown writers? They really seem to be struggling for original subject material and plots. We used to make some great programs but just lately I'm becoming more disillusioned.

When I was growing up there seemed to be alot more different kind's of tv show's now they have given up on good comedy or drama and instead are going for reality TV, which I don't like, I think it is cheaper to make!!

I am so pleased I have not had a TV Licence for a year, it sounds like I am not missing anything and saved some money

Terry, we do not pay for TV reception here. But I download "torrents" of mostly UK
TV shows for FREE from web sites like thepiratebay and tvchaosuk and others.
Costs nothing, downloads go quick, and I have the files to keep for replays.
Mostly get MP4 files, which I then convert to AVI to play on my DVD player
to a TV.

Can't stand that rubbish, it's a revolving door of no bodies. Out of curiosity I looked to see which celebs where in the BB and wasn't surprised to find I didn't know who any of them are.

I think I know two things that have made story and script writing difficult:
1) It's all been done before.
2) Mobile phones. No one can get in any difficult situation so much now, because naturally they would have a mobile phone and call for help.

Chuck we have to pay to watch any channel here,so even if you did not watch the BBC you would still have to pay,as I have said before if the BBC was a subscription channel it would fail in weeks, it only survives at the moment as folk are forced to pay for it

Then why not NOT pay and NOT watch over the air.

Do what I do and download torrents of the programs you want
to watch, Right now I have Endeavour, Call the Midwife, and
Father Brown.

That is what I have been doing for the last year Chuck

I am currently watching something called the Detectorists. It's kind of like LOTSW except these men trudge around fields holding metal detectors and most of the people are south of 50.

So I am missing something here. Must you pay even if you get
nothing on your tv from any UK broadcaster?? You watch only
what you download from torrent sites like the piratebay and
yet you still pay a tax??? Really weird! Glad to be in the US of A!

We get the 5 o'clock network news and a few weekend Public TV
shows over an antenna fir which we pay nothing. All else we get
comes from several torrent sites for free.

"... any [UK] household watching or recording live television transmissions as they are being broadcast (terrestrial, satellite, cable, or internet) is required to hold a television license." See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licensing_in_the_United_Kingdom for an explanation of the UK TV licensing fee. This is true, in one form or another, throughout much of Western Europe.

Yes, but ... if you are LATER downloading a torrent, you are NOT
"watching or recording live television transmissions as they are being broadcast".

Whatever you are capturing was not watched or recorded as it was being
broadcast, but rather recorded way later and from a different source.

Still think you would not owe a license fee if all you do is download
TV torrents. But certainly not my worry.

And that is why Terry has not paid a license fee since about a year ago! He wrote extensively about abandoning broadcast TV in order to stop paying the license fee at the time he made the transition.

Have to confess that downloading a torrent of stuff is not my bag and happen to pay a truly exorbitant amount to a cable company to have TV and internet access. Maybe I'll be more adventuresome in the future.
