signature tune

Does anyone feel that bit of comfort when you hear the signature tune?
Whenever I hear it I'm reminded of better days when we weren't so
crowded with modernity (if that's a word). ~Sheree~

Oh Yea. Very mellowing. Sets me right down in my
chair.

Interesting that Ronnie Hazlehurst did music for many
shows, but this is unusual, very different both
for Ronnie Hazlehurst and for British TV. Nothing
ever else like it.

I LOVE this theme. When it comes on, I relax.

I totally agree with both your sentiments and further in regard to the music, I love its use in scenes. The one that springs to mind is "A Leg Up for Christmas". I think I have the title. When our three rapscallions go to Howard's window to encourage him to come outside the use of the piccolo or whatever is so amusing. To me it actually says, "Come on, come on." when Compo motions.

There is something magical about the theme tune, it calms in an instance, just hearing those first few bars can make you stop what you are doing and loose yourself in watching something you have probably seen many times before, but that does not matter,I did have it as a ringtone on my mobile a few years ago,but I never got around to answering the call as I was lost in the tune

lol, too funny . .I leave it on sometimes for my cats. They know I am staying in when they hear that.

Most of Ronnie Hazlehursts themes in some way are made up of the title of whatever show it is.

I believe the pilot was orginally called 'The Last of the Summer Wine', and the opening titles were changed for the first repeat.

The opening bars of the theme tune are clearly based on the words 'The Last of the Summer Wine'.

Loved it when played as Dallas in Welcome To Earth

In "Welcome to Earth" the tune was given a sci-fi twist to it, the Dallas theme was in "Why Does Norman Clegg Buy Ladies Elastic Stockings?"

Okay, I recall the original title was going to be "The Library Mob" and the Dallas theme was played when Seymour had our duo drill for oil on that bike thingy.

When I hear that music it calms me down, soothes me and engenders a feeling of well-being.
Familiarity.

yes I love it, one thing I have noticed and I am sure it has been mentioned before, it was played faster and a little more strident in the first series, and a lot more gentle and slow in the latter ones.

Although the tune with just the instruments is lovely, when the singers
sing it, for some reason, for me, it becomes a bit sad. I don't know why.

I agree with you Sheree. It always seems to bring a touch of introspection some how.

According to Wiki, the BBC initially disliked Ronnie Hazlehurst's theme, feeling it was not proper for a comedy programme to have such mellow music. He was asked to play the music faster for more comedic effect but eventually his original slower version was accepted and what a great decision that turned out to be. The version that`s played during Just a small Funeral, showing some picturesque scenes around Holmfirth is just so beautiful and emotive. You would have to made of stone not to be moved by it.

The producers of Dallas got a bit annoyed about them using their theme ,so they had to change it slightly.

Technically, it's not the Dallas theme. When you listen closely, it's the Summer Wine theme played with trumpets at a faster tempo.
